Writes Tristan Greenaway, Deputy Head, Co-Curricular

The first game of the staff cricket season saw the might of the Trumpers take on the slightly mightier (retrospectively) Dillip’s XI. Bowling first, Head Porter Kev Sharrock opened the attack alongside Mr Champness (MFL), and a couple of early wickets gave the staff some hope of control in the game. L6th former Sid Embleton‑Bloomer added a touch of extra quality to proceedings, while his peer Theo Sousei even poached a surprising catch. Messrs Brennan (Geography), Farrar‑Bell (History), Fowler (Head of Cricket Development), Willson (Head of D&T) and Greenaway (Head of Co‑Curricular) all played their part in allowing the opposition to accumulate an eye‑watering 176–5 from 20 overs.

In reply, a start of 11–3 after four overs was far from ideal, with Mr Champness, Mr Fowler and Mr Brennan all falling to early‑season nerves and straight deliveries. The L6th formers proved an oasis of cricketing talent in the desert of Trumpers’ mediocrity, before Mr Greenaway (46 not out) and Mr Farrar‑Bell (11 not out) provided the glossy finish (!) and moral victory the staff so craved. A final score of 150–5 represented a thumping defeat, but a strangely satisfying moral victory nonetheless.

Two games against the Longstops (parents), Berkhamsted staff, St John’s Prep staff and Chorleywood CC follow after half term, with a 100% record still—remarkably—absolutely possible.
